Guidance from Sixty-eighth High Priest Nichinyo Shonin
On the Occasion of the October
Kosen-rufu Shodai Ceremony October 6, 2019
Reception Hall, Head Temple Taisekiji
On this occasion of the October Kosen-rufu Shodai Ceremony, conducted here today at the Head Temple, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the large number of participants in attendance.
As you know, on September 20th, our Sixty-seventh High Priest Nikken Shonin calmly passed away at the age of 96.
In July of 1979, Nikken Shonin inherited the Heritage of the Law from the former High Priest Nittatsu Shonin. The late High Priest Nikken Shonin then took the leadership of our denomination for 27 years. I sincerely and respectfully offer my deepest gratitude to the late High Priest Nikken Shonin for guiding and teaching all the priesthood and laity of Nichiren Shoshu, aiming toward the propagation of the Law throughout the entire world.
During his tenure as the High Priest, the late High Priest Nikken Shonin rigorously dealt with difficult issues, such as the Shoshinkai problem and the Soka Gakkai problem, with religious tenets that are based on the Heritage of the Law transmitted from our founder Nichiren Daishonin and Second High Priest Nikko Shonin and on down to the successive High Priests. We, all the members of the priesthood and laity of Nichiren Shoshu, express our profound gratitude to the late High Priest Nikken Shonin for taking decisive measures to warn them of what is right or wrong.
Furthermore, the late High Priest Nikken Shonin conducted commemorative ceremonies, including the 700th Anniversary of Nichiren Daishonin’s passing, the Great Gathering of 60,000 believers associated with the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, and the Grand Ceremony to commemorate the 750th Anniversary of the Establishment of True
Buddhism, as well as refurbishing and maintaining the grounds of the Head Temple, including the establishment of the Hoando, and reconstructing the Kyakuden (Reception Hall). Meanwhile, he established Fuji Gakurin College in Tokyo. At this college, the late High Priest Nikken Shonin, himself, gave lectures on the “Doctrines of the Three Great Secret Laws,” which is the deep and profound doctrine of our denomination. I feel tremendous gratitude for his guidance to educate and cultivate the young priests.
Moreover, all the Nichiren Shoshu priests and lay believers are deeply appreciative of his lectures on the profound doctrines of Nichiren Shoshu through his writings, which include Lecture on the Life Span Chapter (Juryohon seppo), Lecture on the True Object of Worship (Kanjin no honzon-sho kowa), Commentary on One Hundred and Six Articles (Hyakurokka shudatsu taiken haijutsu ki) and more.
Today’s Kosen-rufu Shodai Ceremony, too, was initiated based on the original proposal of the late High Priest Nikken Shonin, and the same is true for the chapter tozans, which now are being conducted.
All of the Nichiren Shoshu priesthood and laity will show our deep appreciation for his teaching and guiding us in various aspects, based on his deep and profound compassion. I strongly feel that it is most essential that all of us, based on unity between the priesthood and laity in the spirit of itai doshin, further devote ourselves to our practice for oneself and others, in order to repay the boundless debts of gratitude we owe to the late High Priest Nikken Shonin.
I sincerely wish that each of you will understand the profound desire of the late High Priest Nikken Shonin and make further efforts in your practice, aiming toward the achievement of our goal.
Lastly, let me take this opportunity to give you the following information concerning the funeral of the late High Priest Nikken Shonin. A wake will be held on the two days of the ninth and tenth of October. Then, a formal funeral will be conducted on October 11th. This will conclude today’s address.
